The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes approximately 50 minutes, passing through the village of Machame on the mountain’s lower slopes. The path can be muddy and slippery at lower elevations, so using gaiters and trekking poles is recommended. After a short trek, you will arrive at Machame Camp.

Today, you will enjoy a gentle ascent with panoramic views as you cross the southwest side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After passing beneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach, you’ll stop for a hot lunch at the base of the Lava Tower (4,600 m). Following lunch, you’ll descend into the Great Barranco Valley, reaching an elevation of 3,950 meters.

From there, the route continues uphill to Barafu Camp. This marks the completion of the scenic South Circuit, which provides panoramic views of the summit from various angles. You will set up camp here, with the summit visible in the distance.

In the hours of the mid-night (between midnight and 2 a.m.), you’ll begin your final ascent toward the summit, trekking between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. The route takes you northwest, climbing through steep scree to reach Stella Point on the crater rim. This section is the most physically and mentally demanding part of the climb. Upon arrival at Stella Point, you’ll take a brief rest and be rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise—an unforgettable sight. Those hiking at a faster pace may even witness the sunrise from the summit itself. From Stella Point, the final hour-long push to Uhuru Peak may include snowy conditions. Reaching Uhuru Peak marks your arrival at the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro—and all of Africa! From the summit, your descent begins straight down to Mweka Camp, with a stop at Barafu for lunch. Trekking poles and gaiters are helpful for navigating the loose gravel on the way down. You’ll end the day at Mweka Camp, where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain.
