Moshi to Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts

Drive to Marangu Gate for registration and begin your trek through dense rainforest filled with tropical birds and Colobus monkeys. Reach Mandara Huts in the afternoon and take an optional short walk to Maundi Crater for breathtaking views of Kenya and northern Tanzania.

Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts

Leave the forest behind and ascend through open moorland with beautiful views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The day offers great acclimatization and amazing scenery with unique vegetation like giant lobelias and groundsels along the scenic Marangu Route trail.

Full Day Acclimatization at Horombo Huts

Hiking Time: 3-5 hours

This extra day is used for acclimatization. You hike towards or to Mawenzi Hut and back. The unique landscape offers motivating views of Kibo and Mawenzi.

Horombo Huts to Kibo Huts

Trek across the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks through the high alpine desert. The trail is dry and rocky with wide-open views of the summit ahead. Arrive at Kibo Huts by afternoon, rest, and prepare for your challenging midnight summit attempt.

Kibo Huts to Uhuru Peak, then Descend to Horombo Huts

Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Kibo for lunch and continue down to Horombo huts for a well-earned rest.

Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi

Descend through moorland and rainforest, passing Mandara Huts before reaching Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and celebrate your successful climb. Drive back to Moshi for relaxation, a refreshing shower, and an optional farewell dinner.
