From Moshi in Tanzania: 6 Days Group Budget Kilimanjaro Climb via Rongai Route

MOSHI – RONGAI GATE (NALEMORU) – SIMBA CAMP

Altitude: 2,020m to 2,650m

Habitat: Montane Forest 

After an early breakfast, you will embark on a scenic drive to Rongai Gate, located near the Kenyan border. Here, you will complete park registration before beginning your trek. The trail starts with a gentle walk through cultivated farmlands and soon enters the lush montane forest, where you may spot colobus monkeys and exotic bird species. As you ascend gradually, the air grows cooler, and the dense forest gives way to open moorland terrain. Oxygen tanks will be on standby in case of altitude-related symptoms..

SIMBA CAMP – SECOND CAVE CAMP

Altitude: 2,650m to 3,450m 

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours 

Distance: 6km 

Habitat: Moorland 

The day begins with a steady but manageable ascent, as you leave the forest and enter the vast, open moorland zone. This section of the trail offers stunning views of the Kenyan plains stretching into the distance. The landscape is dotted with unique plant species, including giant lobelias and senecios, which thrive in the high-altitude environment. Upon reaching Second Cave Camp, you will settle in for the afternoon. Public toilets will be available for use, and oxygen tanks will be accessible as a precaution, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience at higher altitudes.

SECOND CAVE CAMP –THIRD CAVE CAMP

Distance: 3.3km/2mi 

Hiking time: 3-4hrs 

Elevation: 2635m/8645ft to 3936m/12,913ft 

Altitude : 449m 

Habitat: Semi Desert 

After breakfast and packing, you continue your stead ascent, entering into the semi-desert terrain. This relatively short hiking day brings you closer to the Easter ice fields, continually drawing your attention to their beauty. Pay attention to your body and keep your guide informed of any signs of altitude sickness. You will find your wash tents ready for use, allowing you to freshen up after the climb. Public toilets will be available for added convenience. A short acclimatization hike will be encouraged before dinner, and oxygen support will be available as needed.

THIRD CAVE CAMP – KIBO HUTS

Distance: 6.7km/4.2mi 

Hiking time: 4-5hrs 

Elevation: 3936m/12,913ft to 5174m/16975ft 

Altitude: 1238m 

Habitat: Alpine Desert 

As you depart early the semi-desert zone from the Third Cave early in the morning and begin your trek into the Alpine Desert terrain for the remainder of your ascent. Today’s hike will take you just below the Kibo crater wall to the Kibo Huts. At this point, you will merge with the Marangu Route, which you will use to hike to the summit. You will prepare your clothing and equipment (replace batteries for headlamp and camera) before you go to bed by 7 PM and try to catch a few hours of rest before your summit attempt. you will find your wash tents ready for use, allowing you to freshen up after the climb. Public toilets will be available for added convenience. A short acclimatization hike will be encouraged before dinner, and oxygen support will be available as needed.

KIBO HUTS - UHURU PEAK SUMMIT - HOROMBO HUTS

Distance: 4km /2.5 mi up -15.75km /9.8mi down 

Hiking time: 5-7hrs up /5-6hrs down

Elevation: 5174m/16975ft to 5895m/19,341ft 

Altitude gained: 721m, Descent to 3721m/12,208ft 

Altitude lost: 2174m 

Habitat: Glaciers, Snow Capped 

Excitement builds as the trek begins between midnight and 2 a.m., the most challenging part of the journey. Moving between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, hikers ascend heavy scree in a switchback pattern toward Stella Point, where a breathtaking sunrise awaits. A final hour-long push through the snow leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrations, photos, and joy mark the achievement before a steep descent begins. A stop at Kibo Hut provides a quick rest and lunch before continuing to Horombo Huts. Trekking poles and gaiters are advised for the loose gravel. A well-earned rest awaits at Horombo Hut for the final night on the mountain. Your wash tents will be available, providing an opportunity to freshen up before dinner.

HOROMBO HUTS – MARANGU GATE – MOSHI

Distance: 20km/12.5mi 

Hiking time :6-7hrs 

Elevation: 3721m/12,208ft to 1905m/6250ft 

Altitude lost: 1816m 

Habitat: Rainforest 

After breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew it’s time to say goodbye. We continue the descent down stopping at the Mandara Huts for lunch. Remember to tip your guides, cooks, and porters, since you will be leaving them here. You return back to the Marangu Park Gate and receive your summit certificates. As the weather is drastically warmer, the terrain is wet, muddy and steep and we highly recommend Gaiters and trekking poles. From the gate, a vehicle will meet you to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 45 minutes). Enjoy a long over due hot shower, dinner and celebrations!

MOSHI – TRANSFER TO KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (JRO)

Altitude: 1,200m (Moshi) - 890m (JRO)

Hiking Time: 3–4 hour

Distance: 10 km

Habitat: Rainforest

After a well-deserved rest at your hotel in Moshi, it’s time to conclude your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure. You will enjoy a leisurely breakfast, reflecting on your incredible journey to Africa’s highest peak. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have some time to explore Moshi or shop for souvenirs. At the designated time, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure. As you bid farewell to Tanzania, you leave with unforgettable memories of the 8-day Rongai Route trek, the breathtaking landscapes, and the triumph of reaching Uhuru Peak.
