You’ll break for lunch around midday. At this altitude, it’s common for some hikers to experience mild headaches. After the Lava Tower, the trail descends for about two hours through a dusty, rocky path to reach Barranco Camp for an overnight stay.

At Barafu, you will establish your camp, unwind, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the ascent to the summit. From this location, both the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks can be seen. The final stretch takes about an hour, and you may witness the sunrise at Stella Point, along the way, or at the summit itself (Uhuru Peak, 5,895m). After spending 10–15 minutes at the top for photos and enjoying the view, you'll descend back to Barafu Camp for brunch and rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp. The total distance is 5 km up and 12 km down, with hiking times of 7–8 hours for the ascent and 4–6 hours for the descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m).
