Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Overnight: Machame Camp

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (50 minutes). After registration, begin trekking through lush rainforest along a winding trail. The path may be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are useful. Reach Machame Camp by evening.

Machame Camp to Shira Cave Camp

Elevation: 3,100m ? 3,840m

Distance: 9 km | 

Hiking Time: 4–6 hrs

Habitat: Moorland

Overnight: Shira Camp

Climb steadily, leaving the rainforest and entering the moorland zone. Cross a valley and ascend a rocky ridge before continuing west toward Shira Plateau. Arrive at Shira Cave Camp with spectacular views of Kibo peak.

Shira Cave Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,840m ? 4,600m (Lava Tower) ? 3,860m

Habitat: Semi-Desert

Overnight: Barranco Camp

Ascend gradually with panoramic views while traversing Kilimanjaro’s southwest. Stop for lunch at Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending into the scenic Barranco Valley. This day is key for acclimatization.

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,000m ? 4,700m

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Overnight: Barafu Camp

Climb the famous Barranco Wall (4,250m), then descend into Karanga Valley before joining the Mweka route junction. Continue upward to reach Barafu Camp, your base camp before the summit attempt. Enjoy views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Barafu Camp to Summit (Uhuru Peak) & Down to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,700m ? 5,895m (Uhuru) ? 3,090m

Distance: 6 km up | 13 km down

Hiking Time: 10–13 hrs

Habitat: Arctic / Summit zone

Overnight: Mweka Camp

Start at midnight, ascending slowly over scree slopes toward Stella Point (5,685m). Witness a breathtaking sunrise before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Descend via Barafu (lunch stop) to Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi then Arusha

Elevation: 3,090m ? 1,680m

Distance: 10 km | 

Hiking Time: 3–4 hrs

Habitat: Forest

Descend through lush forest to Mweka Gate where you will receive your summit certificates. Transfer to Moshi and then to Arusha for a night of rest and preparation to go on safari on the next day.

Descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. Spot the Big Five, hippos, flamingos, and many bird species. Picnic lunch inside the crater. Afternoon drive back to Arusha.
