From Moshi to Machame camp

Machame camp to Shira Cave Camp

After a hearty breakfast, we began the slow ascent to Lava Tower (15,223 ft), feeling the effects of the thinning air and taking frequent rests. By noon, we reached Lava Tower and enjoyed a warm lunch of soup, sandwiches, and fruit. Some climbers used supplemental oxygen to adjust to the altitude. After a break, we descended toward Barranco Camp (13,044 ft), where the thicker air brought relief. Along the way, we admired the towering Seneca plants. By late afternoon, we arrived at Barranco Camp, exhausted but content. A warm dinner of rice, vegetables, and meat restored our energy. The trail then crossed rocky ridges before descending into Karanga Valley, where thicker air provided relief. A final uphill stretch led to Karanga Camp (4,035m), where we acclimatized to the thinning oxygen. In the afternoon, we rested, hydrated, and took short acclimatization hikes.
