Moshi - Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts

Your day commences with a journey to Marangu Gate to finalize the required permit registration and formalities prior to embarking on your luxurious ascent. This path ascends through verdant tropical rainforest, reaching the upper edge where you might observe lively blue monkeys. As you progress, the trail expands to unveil the picturesque hillsides of the Marangu route, ultimately guiding you to the Mandara Huts - Kilimanjaro.

Mandara Huts to Horombo Huts

Destination: Marangu Route – Kilimanjaro National Park

Elevation (ft): 8,858 ft to 12,205 ft

Distance: 12 km

Hiking Time: 6-8 hours

Habitat: Heath / Moorland

Overnight: Horombo Huts.

On your second day on the Marangu Route Kilimanjaro trip, you’ll start with a steep ascend through the lush forest before emerging into the high moorland vegetation zone. If the weather permits, you'll be rewarded with your first view of Kibo and Mawenzi, two of the three volcanic peaks on Mount Kilimanjaro that form the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Horombo Huts (Aclimatization Day)

Hiking Time: 3-5 hours

Overnight: Horombo Huts.

Day four is dedicated to acclimatization. You take a short climb either towards or all the way to Mawenzi Huts camp and then return. Along the way, the distinctive Mt. Kilimanjaro landscape offers the most inspiring views of both Kibo and Mawenzi.

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today’s Marangu Kilimanjaro hike begins with a gradual trek before crossing the barren lunar landscape of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo. You arrive at the Kibo huts campsite nestled at the base of Kibo’s crater, where you’ll have time to rest enough, enjoy an early lunch and light supper, and get ready for the summit push.

Kibo Huts to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Huts

Destination: Marangu Route – Kilimanjaro National Park

Elevation (ft): 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft to 12,205 ft

Distance: 22 km

Hiking Time: 10-13 hours

Habitat: Arctic

Overnight: Horombo Huts.

The day involves a long climbing trail on Marangu Route Kilimanjaro, but the route is mostly downhill. Upon reaching the Kilimanjaro headquarters at Marangu Gate, you will receive a certificate for your accomplishment before being transferred by vehicle to your luxury hotel in Moshi.

You will be transferred to  Nairobi or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure.
