Moshi to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Huts
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to Momella Gate, the starting point of your trek. As you step onto the trail, you’ll pass through open grasslands where cape buffalo and warthogs roam freely. If luck is on your side, you might even spot giraffes and elephants grazing in the distance! The path steadily ascends through lush montane forest, offering a cool and serene atmosphere. Midway, you’ll take a break beneath the famous Fig Tree, an iconic resting spot where you can enjoy your packed lunch. After lunch, the trail continues through a less dense forest teeming with birdlife and playful black-and-white colobus monkeys. By mid-afternoon, the towering cliffs of Mount Meru and the dramatic Ash Cone come into view. You’ll arrive at Miriakamba Huts, nestled in a beautiful grassy clearing, just in time to soak in the golden afternoon sun and breathtaking vistas stretching towards Mount Kilimanjaro.

Miriakamba Huts to Saddle Huts
Today’s trek is a steady but steep climb as you ascend from Miriakamba Huts to Saddle Huts, located at the base of Little Meru. The trail takes you through vibrant montane forest before reaching the Elephant Back Ridge, a scenic halfway point with sweeping views. As you climb higher, the landscape transforms into moorland, with towering giant heather and unique high-altitude vegetation lining the path. You’ll reach Saddle Huts in time for lunch and a well-earned rest. In the afternoon, there’s an optional acclimatization hike up to Little Meru (3,820m / 12,533ft), a short but rewarding trek offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and plains. It takes about an hour to reach the top and just 30 minutes to descend.

Summit Attempt – Descend to Miriakamba Huts
Your summit day kicks off early at 2:00 AM with tea and biscuits. Guided by your headlamp, you’ll follow the trail through bushland to Rhino Point (3821m), where the path becomes steeper and more demanding. As you continue along the north ridge, you'll navigate through loose lava ash and rocky ground. After approximately 4 to 5 hours of climbing, you’ll arrive at Socialist Peak (4562m), just in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise over Kilimanjaro and the striking crater of Mount Meru. After taking in the stunning views, you'll descend the same way back to Saddle Huts for a well-deserved rest and some hot soup. Once re-energized, you'll continue your descent to Miriakamba Huts, where you can relax and reflect on your remarkable adventure.

Miriakamba Huts (2500m) – Momella Gate (1500m) to Moshi
After breakfast, you’ll begin a 2–3 hour descent along the Northern Route back to Momella Gate. Though the descent is shorter than the climb, you may still encounter wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, buffalos, and black-and-white colobus monkeys along the way. Upon reaching the gate, you’ll say goodbye to your hiking team, and your driver will transfer you back to Moshi, where you can unwind after an unforgettable adventure.
