From Moshi to Momella Gate (1500m) – Miriakamba Huts (2500m)
Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Moshi, followed by a short 45-minute drive to the Arusha National Park Gate. While your guide handles the park's paperwork, feel free to explore the informative displays about the park’s wildlife and ecosystem. Once the formalities are complete and the team of porters is ready, you’ll drive a bit further to Momella Gate, where an armed park ranger will accompany you on your hike. As you begin your walk, you’ll spot giraffes and buffalos grazing in the area. Soon, you’ll head into the acacia forest, where the Southern Route will take you on a steady 2-hour climb to Maio Falls, surrounded by beautiful meadows—a perfect spot for a picnic. After your break, you’ll continue your hike, passing the iconic ‘Arched Fig Tree,’ where your ranger will share the fascinating story of its unusual shape. Another 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking will bring you to Miriakamba Huts.

After breakfast, you’ll start your day with a steep climb from Miriakamba Huts. The altitude gain brings cooler temperatures and a refreshing change in the atmosphere, with clouds often lingering in the rainforest. In about 2 hours, you’ll reach ‘Mgongo wa Tembo’ (Elephant Back) at 3200m, a perfect spot to take a break and admire the view. As you continue, the landscape transitions from rainforest to an open, airy bushland. Around midday, you’ll arrive at Saddle Huts (3550m) for a well-deserved lunch. In the afternoon, there’s an optional side trip to Little Meru (3820m), a 1 to 1.5-hour hike offering stunning views of Arusha National Park and even Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Back at the hut, enjoy a warm dinner and a briefing about tomorrow’s summit climb.

Your summit day begins early with tea and biscuits at 02:00 hrs. By the light of your headlamp, you’ll follow the trail through the bushland to Rhino Point (3821m), where the path gets more challenging with some short, steep climbs. Continuing along the north ridge, you’ll pass through lava ash and rocky terrain. After about 4-5 hours, the summit is in sight, and you’ll reach Socialist Peak (4562m). From here, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable sunrise over Kilimanjaro and views of Mount Meru’s dramatic crater. After soaking in the sights, you’ll descend along the same route, returning to Saddle Huts for a long break and some warm soup. Refreshed, you’ll continue down to Miriakamba Huts, where you’ll relax and reflect on the incredible journey.

After breakfast, you’ll take the Northern Route for a 2- 3hour descent back to Momella Gate. While the descent is shorter than the ascent, you’ll still have a chance to spot elephants, giraffes, buffalos, and even black-and-white Columbus monkeys. Once at the gate, you’ll bid farewell to your hiking crew, and your driver will take you back to Moshi to relax after a truly memorable experience.
